How does Mining work?

Postby jongre » Wed Sep 02, 2015 12:42 pm

I haven't played much Haven and Hearth since around W3 and back then mining was a pain, all the mining nodes on the map were pretty much already occupied by someone so getting metal as a solo player was hard outside of trading. Has mining changed since then? Are metal veins more common or are they still stupidly rare and require a ton of Rustroot to track down?

Now with the removal of teleporting, I don't think trading will be very convenient and I want to play the game as a solo player(as long as I can.)

Metal seems about as common as it was in w5+, which is to say everyone can find with with effort. There's even some surface rocks that give ore.

Now I forget, back in w3 you had the full underground and not the infini mines that were in place before right?

Wow, you can get metallic rocks above ground now? Do you happen to know which types of rock are metallic?

W3 had underground mining iirc.

I've heard of heavy earth, and I've personally mined a black ore rock.

W3 was endless instanced mines over nodes, now the map actually has layers of underground connected to the overground and the ore spawns in veins that can be depleted.
I've managed to dig up some Iron Ochre and black coal with a Q8 axe and 14 str in my local area, so I'm guessing it's quite common.

nah, caves, there's a lot of soft spots.
The thing to remember is that you first have to break through the outer surface wall to reveal the orey goodness within. I've not gotten anything from a surface wall, not even a stone.

Seriously? Haven't started mining yet, but that sucks. Veins showing in caves were one of the first sources of "non-ground" ore (bog iron, iron sands, etc)

Mining the cave whole day. Only 5-10 types of stones and heavy dirt. In which staff I can find an ore?

Can someone explain how cave-ins and mine supports work? Is it risky to mine without a support? If so, how do you get the initial nuggets of metal to create a mine support?
