does anyone know how tanning works i cant seem to figure it out

You need to fill the tub with tanning fluid, not the old way of adding water and then add bark. You need an empty bucket equipped to make the tanning fluid. Other than that, it's just waiting (24 hrs I understand).

how do i make the tanning fluid just add bark to empty bucket with barrel of water next to me ?

I managed it this way. I equipped two buckets, one full of water and the other empty. I had the bark in my inventory, and when I made the tanning fluid, it went from one bucket to the other.
