How do I build a mine shaft?

Why would you need to?, there's a cave like every 10 feet......

Mineshafts require hardened leather discovery to unlock.

Dust falling has nothing to do with cave ins it seems (this is after much testing). Only way to prevent cave ins completely is to use supports, but otherwise mining in a zig zag fashion seems to be the safest you can get.

Cave ins are not fatal nor do they case HHP damage at cave level currently.
