Depends on what you're doing. PvP I'd say melee is a bit better because of its consistency. Hunting animals? If you git gud then melee. If you haven't gotten ridiculously good, like 95% of players, then ranged mixed with some basic melee. Which animals also varies. As your bow and arrows improve you can start one shotting Foxes, Mouflon, Bats, Deer, etc.. Against ants it's always better to melee 1 at a time.
