None of the swamps I've seen have been connected or near any rivers, maybe that's a thing?

It's random like anything else. My temporary noob camp was near a river that had a swamp at the end of it. That was the first swamp I came across after walking for hours. While exploring I've also come across areas that have more than one swamp within a short distance of each other. I've found them landlocked, near rivers, and near lakes.

This is incorrect, on my walk to meet up with friends I encountered a large swamp touching two rivers

Swamps can be directly connected to rivers.

They're out there. Might be less common than they used to be, but they can definitely get bigger.

I've seen at least 3 types of swamps, some acting as the headwaters for a river. Last night I came across one that took up several map tiles.
