Surface ore are easy recognisable vs stone boulders?

Same. I mined for 2 days straight and found nothing so ended up just wandering for 2 hours until I found surface ore. Haven't found any since, though.

A friend of mine has been smelting heavy earth for days and not gotten any metal yet.

It's different colors, just like all other rocks. My best suggestion is to look for darker rocks.

Anyone can give me an stimate of native hardness of iron ores? i have 40 str and i can't find iron (and that's making me crazy)

Depends on rock hardness mainly. The only ore vein I have found was pretty soft (probably as little as 20 str would be enough) on one end and medium hard on the other (probably requiring over 40 str)

Not true. Rocks have a native hardness, modified by a variance field in the map.



I might misunderstood you, sorry, but do you mean that iron can be mined only a certain strength? So should I not even try with str 16?
