Mining help

Can someone explain me how does the mining work? How to create a cave, then mine etc.

you can't create a cave. You have to find one and can try mining inside one to get ore. Results are random.

You can build a mine hole. it requires hardened leather, though, so you'll need wax. Dropping mineholes randomly is an expensive proposition so you'll probably want to use rustroot extract to search out where ore might be. Word is that the extract tells you what rocks are below you, and not where the nearest ore is. I haven't experimented with myself yet, and haven't read any specifics other than what I mentioned.

Be careful if you build minehole inside walls. Somone can come up through it. Same with cave holes

Aw okay, thanks. There are some caves near my base, but they're blocked with hearthfires, and it says I'm too weak to destroy it. I guess I need more strenght xd.

A HF has a soak of 5, so you need 5+1 damage - damage of your tool (1 for stone axe) squared STR to damage them. (25 with stone axe, 36 without.) if you have a pick, then only 16, and only need base with a sledgehammer, assuming they're still in game.

edit: I will note I've read that 'running off" a hearth fire is still possible if you get stuck on one, such as at a cave entrance. Set speed to sprint (4) and just keep trying to move. You'll get off eventually.

I have been scouring the caves for days, finding all manner of stone, and TONS of coal. Cannot for the life of me find ore. Is it typically going to be mixed in with the stone? Or is the method I have been using fine, I typically go through the cave path, knock a wall off check what it is move further down and continue doing that till the cave is completely covered and I move on to the next. Should I just mine in a straight line or something? There has to be something I am doing wrong here.

It seems to be interspersed with rock. I found a few places where there was only 6-9 ore tiles in the center of a rock node. The best way to be sure is to dig every 3-4 tiles so you have almost every stone spot revealed in your cave that you can dig. I'd reccomend against digging in a straight line though, getting trapped from a cave in right after finding ore just makes you cry.

Also, ores seem to be regional based. You may very well be in a region with no or little ore, while as other spots are so prolific as to have even the surface interspersed with ore boulders. I'd just recommend a lot of exploration.

Ore comes from ore tiles that net nothing but ore, and I've found a node directly from the cave wall. Note that they're not called 'ore'; they have fancy names like 'Heavy Earth'. When you stockpile them, you'll see if they're considered 'Stone' or 'Ore'.

Also, please note that it appears that different ores have different chances to actually turn into metal while smelted. Heavy earth and iron orche being some of the worst that I've found.

I have walked for hours in random directions testing caves in different areas with no real luck. I will just keep looking I guess.. Just unlucky I suppose.
