How does one apply a lock to the a coffer?

I have the lock and coffer, but adding a lock to the gate was as simple as a right click, the coffer does not seem to be the same.

I tried adding a lock to my house as well and it doesn't seem to work the same way as a gate

Lock skill only says coffers, chests, gates can be locked.

Reviving this one since I have the same problem. Made a coffer, made a lock. Can't apply lock to coffer as I did to the Palisade. What am I doing wrong?
