i got over.2 per bone

If you get over .2 per bone, then maybe it depends on the bone type? I've been getting exactly .2 per bone for rabbits and chickens.

You can get ash from firebrands or sticks, too, if you light them and then just put them out by sticking them in your pack. However, this ash has no quality, so don't use it for crafting.
