it requires hard metal, that is iron, bronze or steel. Tin isn't hard metal

get some copper and make bronze with copper + tin

Cast iron still works, too (or should according to replies in the Announcement thread).

It does. P.S. I love my new pickaxe, only took me 4 days mining to make it. Hurray hermit-ish life.
