should i stay or should i go?

Postby Turtlesir » Sat Sep 12, 2015 7:52 pm

is there still time and space to move on to a new (isolated) area? i seriously underestimated how big the new world is and in my eagerness to start hermitting i plonked down on the outskirts of the spawning area. i'm doing pretty well considering, but i'm just not enjoying this game as much as i could if i wasn't constantly running into nude characters and hearth fires everywhere. i'd like to play this game quietly at my own pace without too much interference from other players, though some friendly neighbours a couple minimaps away i can live with. but i'm largely established... palisade, farms and all the basic structures are up, my location is decent (apart from being too close to center), and i own a mine although i haven't started metal phase yet.

should i just soldier on now that i got this far, or pick up whatever valuables i have and start anew?

Unless you arrange to live with/near people you meet through something like the forums, the neighbour condition will negate the "quietly at my own pace" condition most of the time.

Pack up and move on, this world is fleeting either way. It shall end one day, and we shall be born anew. It's good to get used to that concept in haven I feel.

There's lots of open space. Just expect to walk for HOURS real time and try not to get turned around crossing Mountains. I did and there's Nooooobody out where I'm at. :D

You could come in the direction me and mine are at, theres nobody really around. It's quite the distance though.

which direction is that? :P

it would suck if i unwittingly settled close to an aggressive village and they obliterated me overnight, i'd be even farther behind.

Now that your skills are up, you shouldn't be picking a spot so blindly. Player activity is really obvious now due to soil patch checking.

And beyond that take locations to PM for good safety practice :)

move 6 hours to any direction, you get much less people visiting.

No good can ever come out of staying anywhere near the starting zone. Go exploring a bit, this world is massive, you'll be able to find somewhere that is perfect for you. You'll even find a place with birch trees that have bark on them. Walk long enough and you can find an adorable lake with fish that's small enough to wall in entirely and claim all for yourself. Why? Because you can.

Yes, there's always the risk of settling by an aggressive faction, but that's a risk no matter where you go--and there's always a risk that an aggressive faction might move in wherever you settle down, too. You just need to try. The risk goes down the longer you walk.

It's worth it to get away from the naked people. Really.

And such is the circle of life in the Hearthlands... one day, the gods have promised that all shall live forever, but the hearthlings must learn to live in harmony first.

(Interpretation: one day we'll get a permanent world, but we might see the final version of Dwarf Fortress first.)[/size]
