Tar Kiln 101?

Postby Anaklumos » Sat Sep 12, 2015 7:57 pm

I just want a basic rundown on how they work.
I've put wood blocks in and it's trickling tar out slowly

How much tar does 1 block make?

How does it make charcoal?

How long does it take now that it's been fixed?

EDIT:

What you were probably looking for:

Tar per block: most ~.1L, spruce ~.2, pine ~.4
Making Charcoal: fuel it up, light it and wait 16 hours for 2-4 pieces of coal per block
How long: 16 hours IRL time for a full burn it seems
Tar Kiln Quality: Does not effect the burnt materials so don't waste good clay on it
Tar Usage: Torches and tar sticks which right now have only a known cosmetic use to make black roofs
Coal Usage: for smelting metals, do not use for regular fuel ticks because it doesn't do much different than you'd think

Takes very little time.

Varies, most ~.1L, spruce ~.2, pine ~.4

You get to take out charcoal when the pile finishes completely. I use pine and I believe I get 160 pieces per 40 blocks put in? Something to that effect at least.

16 hours? Less than a day but I haven't exactly timed it.

Edit: Not sure if tar values have been tweaked lately, but thinking about it it might be 0.25L/block for pine. I harvested exactly 10L from a completed pine pile yesterday. When there's finally a wiki we can start cataloguing this info.

So. A full kiln yields 160 pieces after a full burn?
How good a fuel is coal compared to other things?
What is tar used for?

tar's for tar sticks / torches. Tar sticks make black roofing and that's why most people want them.

Coal is required for smelting metal, haven't even bothered trying using it for anything else. But it is pretty convenient to use so if it works with fireplaces/kilns it would probably be viable to use.

Edit: Ehn, for anything that will take it wood blocks/sticks are better for fuel. Coal doesn't give much time on the burn timer.

What's black roofing for in terms of structures?

Tar sticks useful for anything else?

It's cosmetic. Like, literally black roofing (the color it looks like in the game).

As for other uses, Tarsticks can be used as fuel and seems to be more efficient than 1 block, though it's a lot of effort where you could just use another block so... they're kind of useless so far lol

Just tar output is different atm. And I asked: tar kilns aren't going to influence the Q so don't use good clay on it :)
