I notice that soil is consume by the earth once it despawns from the ground? was this a feature from the start, I actually can't remember as I hardly dig the ground. XD
Its the same with earthworms by the way, once despawned, the ground rises....

Yes, this is intended and has been in since day 1.

If you want to destroy the soil, make a stockpile and use the destroy command on the stockpile.
