Leveling

Postby Kaios » Sun Sep 27, 2015 8:33 pm

Hi, I've never done leveling much but I needed to do some today. What is with this system? I need to pick up the soil or its going to refill the ground back in or I need to empty my inventory in to a stockpile every 10 seconds??? Was it like this when you first implemented or, I don't know I don't understand how this is supposed to be easier or less clicky or something.

Bug.

If you have multiple heights (above and below) the point you've selected to level to, the tool automatically takes soil you dug high up, and places it against the nearest tile that is below the level point.

Otherwise it's just a click saving tool that digs the ground down evenly to where you ask it to.

Moving to How Do I? as this leveling is working as intended.

Soil that is dropped will automatically raise the height of the tile it lands on by 1 when it decays. If that tile is too high then it will attempt to raise nearby tiles. If it cannot raise a tile because the tile is paved then the dirt will decay and be lost without raising tiles. If there is a height disparity then dirt will automatically fill it without any further action from you. The leveling tool will tell you how many units of dirt you'll need or have in excess. If you'll have excess then plan accordingly by: paving tiles you've leveled, having an open inventory so you can move the dirt elsewhere, or make dirt stockpiles to either save them or adventure -> destroy them to quickly get rid of them.

I actually kind of like it. If you plan properly and adjust the slider, you can auto-shift dirt from high area to low area without it going through inventory or stockpile. It works much better doing many 5X5s than 1 50X50.

Adjusting the slider allows you to control effort, how much dirt is required or left over.

Just a little niggle: max survey size is 30x30.

I've been curious if moving dirt via stages of leveling would be less effort than carrying it over a distance of say 60 tiles.

With a metal shovel yes, it is less time and effort. The more dirt you have to move, the more efficient it is to gradually shift it rather than moving it one cupboard load at a time.

I just completet a share of leveling, and while i think the system is a step in the right direction one thing is really missing:
The ability to one-way link two surveys so that excess from the first is dumped into the linked one. Maybe they have to overlap in a place for it to work, but you should be able to set which target survey you want per flag.

As it is now it is imho to much clicking leading to a completely boring task.
I think landscape reforming could actually be fun, in case you don't have to micro-manage it that much as of now.

It'd be kinda neat if we could designate for surveys to draw from and contribute to piles even. Even if I had to build extra tools to accomplish this it'd be a huge time saver and I'd do it in a heart beat.
