essence / substance / vitality

Postby nethack » Tue Sep 29, 2015 10:49 pm

What are the effect of the different type of qualities ?

I'm especially interested in how soil q affect farming and therefore cooking (what each type of q does and which type of soil I should look after for optimal eating). But please, feel free to explain the different effects of essence / substance / vitality on other domains if you are knowledgeable on the matter.

For food: Essence = Satiation, Substance = Hunger %, Vitality = FEP

For armor: Essence = Deflect, Substance = Absorb, Vitality = Wear

Curio is Image meaning you don't need any particular one to maximize curio benefits.

For leeches: Essence = STR, Substance = DEX, Vitality = CON

Awesome. Just what I was looking for. :D

But leeches... What ? Can you explain what you mean ? I've always used leeches for healing then maybe some fishing (but currently it takes forever so I just throw them away). What is the link I am missing with STR/DEX/ CON ? oO

Each quality point raises each time they drain SHP from you. The individual points are capped by what you have in those stats. The amount of health they drain seems to be the average of their quality multiplied by the same multiplier in haven.

Uh ok. I would have never guessed... thanks for the info !

If I understand it correctly, it seems a little bit odd though. That would mean walking in a swamp with high quality leeches if you have high stats could result in a fast KO... especially if low on SHP ofc (but that's the normal part).

They only drain 3 times before they become bloated, after which they will not absorb anymore SHP. That means leeches will only raise 3 quality points in each point per feeding.

They will become unbloated after a while. Feed them again, leave them be, feed them again, rinse and repeat for high quality leeches.

Don't expect leeches from a swamp to be super high quality with instant KO's, they always start Q10

Ok. It all make sense now : Keep your leeches. Raise them in various Q. Faster and faster healing each time.

Haven has always had a proud history of pet leeches.

How does this work for tools quality? Does it matter or no?

I've had to revise my opinion about substance being the primary determiner of tool quality. It seems to be an average of the three.
