Do tethered animals have a timer?

I had six animals in a pen, tethered to a hitching post, all in various stages in the taming process - just disappear. Seemingly all at once. I was online three hours ago and they were all there. When I logged on, every single one of them is gone now. No one has a key to the pen, it's on claimed ground too, other than myself and after each taming session, they are secured back. Does anyone have any idea what might've happened? :{ Thank you for the help in advance.
