Gate keys?

On the wiki it's said

Once a gate has been built, the character (the character laying the final touch on the gate) will receive a key for it.

I recently built several gates within my palisade and havent got any keys
whats wrong?

Locks and keys are separate from building the gate.

Wiki is out of date. You need the locks and mechanisms skill and you need to use that to craft a lock. Apply that lock to a door by picking it up and right clicking the door. This will give you a master key which you should never have on your person at any time. Make a slave key and use that instead.

i have both locks and mechanics but cant seem to find anything key-related in my craft window
what;s needed to unlock it?

Making a lock just takes a block of wood. It's not in any locks or keys section of the crafting window, it's under the one for odds and ends.

I'd like to add, if you have multiple gates you can have them all open using one key by attuning the lock to a masterkey if you drag your master key over the lock in your inventory and right click on it.

i know its in the tooltip but most people never see it!

Requires metal nuggets. You'll need to smelt a bar and then turn it into nuggets at a crucible.

You'll need to hold a master key you want to copy into a slave key in your inventory.
