What causes stunting?

Postby Giggidy » Mon Oct 05, 2015 6:58 pm

Heard it was just random chance, but I think I stunted 6 trees by planting them on a really steep incline. Wanted to see if anybody else had run into that as well.

i planted 2 apple trees a long time ago and thought they were stunted because i planted kings oak on the same day and those were growing constantly while the apple tree stayed tiny for longer than a week. now it's bush-sized and it's been longer than 2 weeks probably.
also i planted a bunch of plum trees a while ago and the next day one of them was already bush sized while the rest was still pretty tiny.
now the one that was bush sized is almost fully grown (after a week or so) and all the others are growing on the same rate, still pretty small but bigger than before.
so i guess it's pretty random. i'd say leave them be for as long as you can, they may still grow. i was sure those apple trees weren't gonna grow, now i'm glad i didn't chop them.

According to Jogb stunting is now decided on planting.
Different trees grow in different speeds, ground type has an effect.
No further details.

Do you think ground type includes inclination?

I planted some apple, plum, cherry, and chestnut trees almost first thing, and they're all the size of bushes still, although they produce fruit for some reason. I thought they were stunted too, but they do seem to be gradually growing. I don't know what's up with that. Maybe the graphic just stays small for a very long time?

these are my plum trees. i believe i planted them about a week ago, maybe even less.

i noticed the terrain seems to be changing... it was all bright green when i planted, i'm pretty sure.
you can see some of them are growing faster than others.

On a side note, it would be nice to have some graphical demonstration (flowers maybe, or a sheen) or text based thing (on inspect) to let you know when a tree is truly finished growing, Cutting down a tree a tick early and having the quality get sapped is frustrating.

If you like the expected quality of the tree, let it keep growing. If the tree is going to be lower quality, cut it down. If the tree you're cutting down is close enough in quality to your max, there's nothing wrong with pulling the seeds off and planting more from that. (We all could use more scrap wood, anyway!)

The Inspect tool works to check final quality on trees and crops.

+1. on inspect ' tree appears to be stunted' would go a long way towards helping. no need to sit there everyday and figure out if the tree is growing
