Why can't I place well on forest ground

Why do I have to dig up a tile of dirt to attempt to place a well on forest ground? It seems to be placeable on dirt flats and grasslands and such. Seeing as how the dowsing rod is useless and lies about water, this is making finding a well node impossible. Anyway, does anyone have advice on finding well nodes?

Dowsing rod is useless.

Find a grassland (or other terrain you can sprint on), equip a rod, hotkey the well building button, mash that shit.

Well is not worth it IMHO. 99% of the chances are you will get QL 10 10 10 water and you will stop using it as soon as you settled, and starting to process hide and baking. Not worth the effort and pain to build it in the first place.

You are probably better off making a cart and 6 barrel and haul it from the nearby lake/river or make a signpost/road and travel to a river in an instant while carrying a barrel and teleporting back to your Hearth Fire.
