Farming Ql advice?

Could someone give me some tips on increasing the quality of farming produce/seeds? Progress is painfully slow for me and I'm not quite sure how the system works. Also, is there a better way to find high Ql natural resources (soil, clay etc) than digging very visible potholes on the map?
