What is the Clay Jar used for?

The title says it all.
Total misplay.

Rustroot extract, probably rennet too once you get to that stage (not there myself clearly)

Hah hah, how and why on earth does someone waste millions of LP on Exploration instead of just mining 'till you get something? It worked for my bro.

Nobody, including yourself, has any idea what you're talking about.
Come back two hours earlier.

*sighs* My honour demands an honest answer.

You spend the LP on EXP and grind PER because the second best curio in the game that can be run reliably is glimmer moss. It takes more PER*EXP to find than rustroot, so being able to see rustroot is effectively free. Test mining walls is very much the best way to go when rustroot are a far off dream, but due to rustroots range bonus from Vit quality, you can scan much larger areas much more quickly once you get things rolling.

Beyond that, the subterranean levels become much harder to mine. Even if you can mine second level, it's far more sensible to mine cave level and prospect with a "view range" from rustroot of 10-15 tiles in all directions of your tunnel.

Beyond this, there's going to be a lot of areas even at the first level where it will be hard to mine into due to lack of caves (at least previous experience says this). That's a lot of time mining just to see if an ore vein is there, and you might have missed it by just two tiles if you exploration mine. Just chipping at cave walls to see what kind of rock it is can completely miss a small ore vein right next to your front door.
