Hermitage Optimal Size

Postby uncleseano » Sun Oct 11, 2015 9:43 am

Allo jerk bags,

What's a a sound size for an 'all in one' (no mine shaft/cave but smelter etc) hermitage. I have a nice flat 22x22 space. I don't wanna farm like a total prick all day either so that's not a requirement. Should I go large or go home?

Also do walls do that Salem-y splash damage on explosion thing? As in can ya slap a brick wall on top of a pali when you feel the burn to upgrade down the line?

Go bigger. Even with just 10 of each crop you'd use a quarter of your claim (or more, I could only think of 12), and you lose 88 tiles to your wall. If you want to build a stone mansion, that's 9x9.

I used to live on a 20x25 in the starting area. I'd make it a 30x40 or 40x40 if I did it again.
Come back two hours earlier.

I'll only be slapping down the larger of the wooden houses, I like too look insignificant

You'll want multiple smelters, at least 1 kiln, a crucible, a finery forge, probably like 5 steel crucibles, at least 1 house for storage probably more, minor farm fields for various foods such as pies and string, room for drying racks and tanning tubs, and probably a little bit of room for some farm animals. Sure, you can forego any part of that that you'd like but those are more or less the basics to surviving and thriving. I'd say go for at least a 50x50 if you're axing out the farm land but still want tree farms. That gives you a wee bit of wiggle room if you need to add something else or if you'd like to breathe every once in awhile.

A village claim will give you 101*101 tiles for 30k LP (personal claim gives <30% for same cost), go for that so you have room to move instead of constantly getting stuck at objects.

My first base I built was 32x32, but it was just temporary for about 2 weeks. Now I just finished my new base, which is 60x60 and my plan is that it will be suficcient for all my needs.

Why even limit yourself? Find a nice empty area far from spawn, make sure there's no neighbours nearby and build a big palisade. It won't take you long at all to earn enough LP to claim even a large chunk of the minimap. Plan your layout, where you want mansions, farmland, working area, forestry area, etc.

It's more time and energy to build and patrol a large area. God help you if you want to level a large area by yourself. Spreading out too much can also make small tasks take a lot longer due to traveling back and forth and around walls. There are pretty good reasons for keeping your home a reasonable size.
