Combat discovery move

Sometimes I use combat discovery on animals but get nothing out of it (got a move only once) am I doing something wrong?

make sure the animal doesn't have any defenses up (or only has one that's partially broken through), otherwise the attack will just get blocked and ignored

The combat discovery is basically an attack which has to hit the animal (for example if it was punch or any other normal attack it would deal damage) in order to get get the discovery. The weight of your attack is based on an average of your UA and MC.
