Another Mining Topic

Postby uncleseano » Mon Oct 19, 2015 3:26 pm

So I'm mining away like a madman but nothing is dropping at all. I have a tile that I can mine. The lil hour glass empties and then refills immediately without anything happening over and over again.

Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal. Every time you perform mining action (that is hourglass in emptied) there is a chance that you get 1 piece of ore / stone or nothing. After that there is a chance that the wall breaks.
Sometimes you may break the wall and get nothing, and sometimes you may get a dozen of rocks before it breaks.

I've done 30-40 actions on a tile before, but that's pretty rare.

In case you're breaking up the initial wall of a cave you'll get nothing (or goodies like catgold).
After that you removed that tile you'll see that the tiles around turn into what they are (stone, ore), which you then can mine for the materials you want (or which they contain, to be precise).
In case you see dust fall when removing a tile you'll know that one of the tiles around this can cause a cave-in.

I wasn't looking, I think there was dust. I had another window open because it was taking so long by the time wall was removed. Still nothing :(

Kinda looks grey or something now

there's an almost complete list of stone vein pics on the wiki: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Stone

the list of ore veins is still very incomplete, but if it's not on the list of stones, it's probably an ore.

Still having some trouble mining. I don't have metal so I cannot build mining supports so how are ya supposed to proceed? I've mined a few exterior walls each with stone on the inside (basalt/flint/sandstone, thanks Turtlesir ) but I caused two Cave ins.

One was because I mined too close to the basalt, the other literally just collapsed while I was mining in a new spot. They all seem to have the dust falling from the ceiling. Are you supposed to keep on bashing at the outer walls until when it DOESN'T have the dust falling, or does it ALWAYS have the dust and you just have to brave cave-ins until you get mats for supports?

Some pointers would be great
