how do i find laurel leaves?

i have the resipie for the hat but i dont remember picking those how do i find more and what do the hat do?

I believe the hat is merely decorative (you can hang it on your wall as well as wear it). If you play with amber client, you can tell it to identify laurel trees on the minimap to make it easy to find them.
