I may be too stupid to play this game

Postby Smoked-Brisket » Sat Oct 24, 2015 5:52 am

So over the past 2 weeks I have left the game alone and come back several times. When I do play I cannot stop for several hours. So it is a compelling game. I resisted the temptation to put down roots many nights in a row and finally settled on a spot. Right now I have built a fence, I have claimed enough land to build a first house. I took bee keeping because I thought it would open up a constant source of food, it has offered me no new options.

My question is what is my best path to be self sustaining as far as food, right now its about fish. I have made my fence, I can build a house, I am a yeoman, maybe too soon , exploration is at 7 and survival is at 8 with my clothes. I have tried to read and make sense of things like FEP's but decided to just eat when I was hungry(i guess I am a dumbass) and I have built all curiosities and studied them when they came available( still do not understand lp's vs xp). I would like to become some kind of tough guy with a compound and am dead tired of walking around and trying to remember if that is a new fucking plant or not. I am not interested in killing others, I would like to be able to hunt and build a stronghold and pvp when attacked. Can I get some guidance on what to do next besides chop a tree or walk around?

TIA

First thing you need to do, is get a palisade. A fence wont cut it. A palisade is decent protection from casual murderers for now. Eventually aim for a brick wall.

Unfortunately for you, getting a palisade requires chopping down lots of trees. You'll also need leather and rope. So get those skills too. Until you have a palisade and are well protected, it's generally not worth getting heavily invested into anything else, because anyone can come along and screw up all of your hard work.

Right, I get that. How do i get to a palisade? Is it best to build yourself a palisade before a beehive? Or a house? I am not asking for a set plan I am asking for some actual advice to kickstart me to self sufficiency and ultimate success. Palisade is better than fence, while I appreciate the response, is no help. Again, I may be too stupid for this game.

Just to be clear, I enjoy chopping trees for a purpose. Palisade is not in my build menu.

My question is what is my best path to be self sustaining as far as food, right now its about fish.

Food variety is important. The more different foods you eat the faster your stats will level up. Here are some other foods available to you:
1. Ants. Even if you have no fighting skill you can trick ants though it is dangerous. Wait next to an anthill until none of the guards are near you, then start to raid it and run away. Lead the ants away for a while, then run back, raid the anthill for real while they're catching up to you, and run again until they give up pursuit. Some ants are edible, others are both edible and excellent curios!
2. Chickens. Prairie areas (brownish on the map but green in reality) often have clusters of chickens. Just pick them up and strangle them.
3. Forage. Early exploration will give you blueberries and chantrelles.

I have made my fence, I can build a house, I am a yeoman, maybe too soon , exploration is at 7 and survival is at 8 with my clothes.

These are all good, Yeomanry lets you actually hold on to what you gather and exploration and survival are the best skills early on. If you get 5-10 Unarmed skill you can also fight ants toe to toe instead of tricking them.

I have tried to read and make sense of things like FEP's but decided to just eat when I was hungry(i guess I am a dumbass)

Short version of FEPS:
Eating food gives you food event points (like experience points for stats), when your FEP bar fills up, you gain a stat semi-randomly (and influenced by the type of foods you were eating.. carrots are good for perception etc). The more DIFFERENT foods you eat within a FEP bar the faster it fills. The higher your highest stat is, the harder the FEP bar is to fill, so try to raise a variety of stats instead of ending up with like 50 INT and 10 everything else. Don't be frustrated if a few stats lag behind, that's just life unless you're in an advanced village. If you make a table and chair and cutlery for yourself you'll get a few nice bonuses to FEPS too but don't stress that.

and I have built all curiosities and studied them when they came available( still do not understand lp's vs xp)

Ignore XP completely. It won't be an issue for you. LP is what you want.

IMO your next step is to raise EXPLORATION and PERCEPTION enough to gather Wild Windsown Weeds. Dry them on a drying rack, and they will eventually turn into seeds. Plow and plant them to make a farm. This will be a great long term source of food and help you a lot.

If you want more advice or want my alt to come live with you (her camp is a mess) PM me.

More exploration (and perception) to forage more usefull stuff: like clowers for riding a horse, shear wool from wild sheep, and milk auroch; and www to conwert it into different crops to plant.
Also you can take mining skill and try mine wall in nearby cave. Beware bats.
Or you can take some risk, and try to interact with neibours.
As already sad, your next goal will be building a palisade. So catching rabbits, turning them into a leather and collecting strings to make a rope is your main job for this stage. For bone glue u need a cauldron, so if you never seen clay, go and dig some.

EXP is a sort of limit; you play game, things happen and it gives you some more points to use. You can ignore EXP and spent them, sinse you have at least 1000.
LP is your main points to buy skills and raise abilities. You use curiosities to get this points. More LP you have (also spent LP) -- better you are.

If you want to learn on your own and ask questions here and there, we're glad to help. There is a wiki at http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Haven_and_Hearth_Wiki. A word of warning, though: much of this site is being updated for the current world. A lot of the old information is still accurate, but it'll be hard to tell which is which since you're new. Look for the "Legacy" header at the top. If it's not there, then it should be an updated page, though it may be incomplete still, what information is there should be accurate. Anything with a "Legacy" information banner may be informative, but may not be accurate.

If you want more of a walkthrough or guide, I recommend you read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40714
