Bowhunting boars randomness

Postby baton4ik » Sat Oct 24, 2015 2:50 pm

The guidelines posted here in different treads just don't work for me.

I find a boar, aggro him, try to get it stuck on a cliff. First problem is that the boar often doesn't get stuck even on a pretty large cliff. Either I have to luck out, or a cliff has to be lengthy.
When a boar gets stuck, I aim and shoot, and it starts running. I run after him, punch-punch-punch, get tired. I have to yield and let him calm down at this point, because he'd run too far away for me to catch up with some stamina left while I'm standing still drinking water.
So i wait a bit, track him down and... Then everything is completely random. Sometimes I punch him and he starts running again. Sometimes he charges and KO's me. Sometimes he aggros by himself. Weird, because his HP should be lower than his fleeing threshold. Even weirder that the same stuff happens if I shoot him again. Sometimes he runs away, like he should, and sometimes he just charges and KO's me.

What's up with that? What do I do? This seems bugged. If the solution is to make a better bow for more mm damage and up my UC to finish him off immediately, then I don't really see the point of bowhunting at all. I'd rather just up my UC and fight him in melee.

Well, if you get a good enough bow and arrows, you can one shot a boar and possibly even a bear. Guess that'll be up to you.

Yeah, but it's a big LP investment. All the guides led me to believe that bowhunting is viable for a new character. So am I just doing something wrong, unlucky, or are the guides lying?
What are the approximate qualities of bow and arrows needed for one-shotting different animals?

Find a big enough cliff within a grassland biome, that way you can trap him properly and run with basically no stamina loss.
I have a perfect spot and I just lure them from the nearby forests to my grassland cliff.

Also remember that if you aggro them by shooting them the second shot at the cliff will most likely kill them anyways, eliminating the need for a chase

One of the big problems with boars is they are very common. When you let them flee you may believe you have caught up to them but instead have found a fresh boar. That can explain some of the things you are seeing.

most animals from what i see run when they take some damage and cannot reach you. For example i could shoot a boar without a cliff for 250 dmg and it will charge strait at me while say i shoot a boar from a cluff for 150 he will run. I prefer to shoot a boar then run away and line up a second shot on him while hes charging to kill him but that requires a bit of mm/perc you might now have. Bow hunting right now with low mm/perc is just good for killing deer in my opinon So when you shot the boar and he ran away on the cliff and you unagroed and then reagroed him its because he has a direct path to you now and wont run but will fight instead

This is exactly right, I've hunted a lot of boars and done this exact thing myself. If your having trouble 'punching them down' may I suggest you get them to the cliff and shoot them, but then immediately yield to them. Once they have left your mini map they should stop running. One more shot at that point should take them down. Try not to aggro them since they will start fleeing again, and make sure it is in fact the same boar.
You could also try 'clovering' one and lead it to a more suitable area/cliff before shooting it. This is not usually necessary, but if maybe worth a try if your having trouble.

Good Luck & Happy Hunting!
