Surveying

Postby OblongNoodle » Mon Nov 02, 2015 7:47 pm

Hey guys just starting out on haven and hearth again. Needed some information or maybe a link to an in depth guide for surveying. Is there currently no way to survey more than the area around the post? like id like to stretch it out to a 50x50 grid if i could. But i cant see how to do something like that. any info helps.

The surveying tool is limited in size. (25x25, I think?) If there isn't anything about in Sevenless's guide, then I don't know of one.

Baiscally, use the tool, drag and drop over an area of land you want to level out to set your flag. You can interact with the flag and use the slider to raise and lower the land. It will tell you how much dirt you will need or have left over after digging. If there is dirt to lower, you'll automatically move it from higher to lower, and if you need more, you'll have to dig it up elsewhere to add it in. If you have a lot left over, make sure to take breaks to take the excess out of the area or it'll get tossed out of the survey area or dropped where you're standing and decay back into the ground. You can drop it or make dirt stockpiles (pick up a piece, right click with it on your pointer to turn into a stockpile, click on the ground to place it. Be sure to not hold down shift when you right click or you'll add it back to the ground.)

surveys can overlap and should decay away after a few days of no interaction.

It's more than 25x25, it depends on your zoom and screen rotation, I think. I was able to go over 30x30.

And they can't actually overlap, or at least no more than few tiles. When i tried placing one over another i got a message saying "this area is already being surveyed".

Also, when placing a survey make sure there aren't any hitboxed objects between you and the center of the surveyed area.

Max size is 31x31. They can't overlap tiles but adjacent tiles share corners so their can be overlap of corners of tiles that you are leveling.

Would be nice to be able to go 50 or 60 tiles wide, i agree

Large surveys can overlap. In some instances one survey can completely encompass another, though I don't know of why they do. It might be elevation related, a ground level survey overlapping one far underground.

31x31 suggests it uses a fixed 32 bit matrix, surveying larger areas would be very taxing, in some cases just the 31x31 can slow down my pc calculating and leveling.
