What does Tunneling do?

Im thinking about getting Tunneling. What exactly does it do? Does it allow me to build mine holes finally? Is there a way to make my own caves, and if so, does this allow me to do that?

"Mining" allows you to build the Minehole object. You probably need to discover hardened leather.

"Tunneling" allows you to get a slightly better return on ore and you're able to build the stone column if I recall correctly. There may be one or two other things that goes along with it.

Haven't discovered Hardened Leather yet. That's why i guess. Thanks!
