Do Mine holes have a "safe zone" for mining?

When you build a mine hole, there is a little area already dug out in the next level down. Do you need to immediately build a support to prevent cave-ins or is there some kind of safe zone immediately around the hole?

i am like 99% sure that the walls of a minehole are functionally identical to regular tiles

We took the chance, and dug a few tiles into the minehole wall and then 3 tiles in placed a mine support. BUT i have heard of that first wall break causing a cave in, so tread carefully.

They have the same chances of being a cave in or not as anywhere else in the mine. Whether you use supports or not is up to you, but you can mine without them once you get started and know how the system works.

Some people just get unlucky and happen to hit the "mine."

The minehole entrance is a support with the same radius as a normal wooden support.
