Once you can find/see rustroot you can mix it with water to make rustroot extract, which you can then use for prospecting, scanning an area of ground below you to indicate whether a metal node is there. On finding one you would then build a mineshaft (minehole) which gives you access to it.

You need to raise perception x exploration to see rustroot and should be aware that a mineshaft is pretty expensive in terms of materials it requires, other than that it is just simply mining out tiles and hoping you get lucky. :)

I am in the same boat as you atm, have a lovely cave, have mined extensively and have yet to find anything other than stone, but I live in hope. :D

So why not prospect the cave from above, as you suggested?

I have but the most interesting thing I have found is black coal, lol, I am building a shaft though, I just can't afford all the materials yet so it's taking time, I'm hoping a) the coal will be worth it in q and b) mining down there will finally lead me to metal. :)

If you have found rustroot, you need to make a clay jar, and it should unlock the rustroot extract recipe (you may need mining skill for this).
With this extract in inventory, right-click it and choose 'prospect'. Wait until it finishes. This will tell you what stone is directly underneath you.
- If there is any ore nearby, it will point in it's direction. Just walk in that direction and prospect every now and then to see wheter you're going the right way, until you hit the node.
- If there aren't any ore nodes nearby, just keep looking. Eventually the pointer is going to appear, and then you're set.

Just to clarify: If the pointer doesn't appear, you need to try somewhere else. With quality 10 rustroot you probably should prospect every 20 tiles or so to not miss a node. The better the quality, the further it prospects.

vit 10 RR has a scan range of 5 tiles. vit 30 has a range of 50 tiles. Apparently perception is involved, but I've yet to see anyone explain how (if it's scan direction accuracy meh, just use more rustroot).

If you have any vit water discovered, using that to make RR extract is the way to go.
