So in the middle of a giant field I have no way to get a well with good water? I would need to be near good water I find in a river? Or just build wells willy nilly and hope the water in that area is good?

At least in previous worlds, quality nodes do not follow the waterways but are a hidden "quality layer" everywhere. Assuming it's the same system, it's possible to find high quality water distant from rivers and lakes if you don't mind building wells just to check.

It should be possible to create a map of sorts to try to triangulate where the highest quality water should be by using existing waterways, but if you're far enough away, it's not going to be a big help to start. Any wells you build could help, though depending on the size of the node, it may not be of any help of all.

first well we made is over q ten in every stat. we just found a good spot to settle I guess
