silkmoth sex

Postby DrStrangelove » Fri Dec 11, 2015 5:55 am

Is the sex type of silkmoth randome? Because, as of now, from my 16 cocoons I had 1 male and 14 female, I feel I should boil the last cocoon to cut my lost. Can the one male handel the situation?

What are the odd of having 14 female out of 15 ? (1/2)^15 ?

When the time come for a moth to have sex it'll look for a mate of opposite sex.
If such exists in the container they'll mate and lay eggs, then both vanish into happy heaven.
In case it won't find a mate it'll die of lonelyness, like all but one of your females will...

I believe he's talking about the sex type when cocoons hatch, whether the chance is exactly 50/50 to be male or female.

I think it's 50/50, and you just had a bad stroke of RNG.

Bad stroke of RNG, or the RNG had a bad stroke...either works.

Well, when i calculate how much cocoons should i leave to hatch to maintain production, i always assume every pair gives me 5 eggs( i know they usually give more, but i save the rest for backup), and i need 20% more cocoons in case RNG fucks me up when hatching. Usually i'm letting free 5-15 specimens of one gender, because they don't have a pair. I've had quite a few situations like you, yeah.
Anyway, the larger the amount of silk moths you hatch, the closer they approach 50/50.

I would just like to point out that the chances of getting 15 females in a row is about 0.003% and this isn't the first I've heard of this.

However, so far my worst luck has been 12 lonely females out of nearly 200.
Come back two hours earlier.

For those that fail math, that's a bit better than the odds of getting dealt a royal flush in 5 card draw. For active poker sites, it's not unusual for them to pop up weekly in at least one game at some level (sites with hundreds of thousand hands dealt per week).

well, the odds would be that, if it was 50% per cocoon, and was truly random, but i don't think the RNG is truly random enough to give statistical probability

Random indeed. Rngesus be praised.
