They vary in size. I think it's somewhat random. However if your asking maximum possible I don't know. A good rule however is you can control your area behind walls in an underground area. The area outside you really can't do much more than claim it. Even if you mined out a large area away from your walls people can still make supports and break them to create cave ins, abusing the system to grief. It's difficult to prevent abuse of game mechanics.

i have a cave with a nearby cave, i'm paranoid to think someone will come attack me so i'm thinking of claiming area underground and building a palisade to keep them away. i would build a small house on the nearby cave but it's on a swamp and i don't think you can build a palisade or remove the swamp.

i like my cave as it has iron and tin. rustroot says i have bloodstone and silvershine 2nd level
wish i found copper but i'm happy with my little hovel
