How do I? Create a Safe Trap

Postby Eviscera2 » Sun Dec 20, 2015 5:53 am

So me and my brother failed miserably at killing a pig with bows, we almost killed it then it was running away... We couldn't catch it (my brother ended up being knocked out in a swamp having leeches feed on his dead body). So then we tried trapping an aurochs with stick stockpiles and shot it... it broke out and trampled me. So we wanted to know what is safe to surround a creature so it can't escape and horrifically eat us???

Will surrounding it with fallen logs work?
Does a creature break stockpiles when it is fleeing?
If so can we trap a creature by putting stockpiles/logs around it at a body of water and shoot it from a boat? (Having them just stand there trying to flee instead of breaking out).

Thanks in advance :D

I'm pretty sure you can't shoot from boat atm.

Animals can bash almost anything softer than palisade, but they don't do that when running.

Right tactic when hunting is to deal small damage and gain IP to use chop/sting that hopefully will kill the animal in one hit.

Edit: Your brother died to leeches? Good tactic to avoid that is to go swamp with full shp and let leeches attach to your character and become bloated. After that they won't deal any more damage and block fresh leeches from attaching.

A hearthling runs faster than a boar. Just make sure you have full stamina before it flees and don't let it flee towards swamps or shallow water where hearthlings can't run.

Take 2 hearthlings, find a huge ledge and use it to build a "U" shape with piles of branches. Aggro an animal and run into the U, go onto the ledge and get back a bit. If the animal starts bashing the pile the ledge isn't big enough (I mean wide/spread for it to annoy animal path-finding). Close the U with another alt, shoot the animal and it will prob be dead or start running, run after it and finish the job.

Just care with bears, they will get enraged at some point and will aggro you again, you need to "cage them" close to the ledge to be safe and shoot them / attack them from above.

Alternative: get real combat stats and do the job like a real hunter, with a sword/bow.

Nah he didn't die, ended up getting out. The leeches continued knocking him out as soon as he woke up (no SHP left).

Thanks for the help! (Just to clarify... they will bash logs??)

Bow hunting anything smaller than a bear is really easy if you know how to do it.
First, you wont need 2 players, you can do this on your own, secondly ALWAYS bring a flask of water with you when hunting.

There are 2 methods here....

Method 1. For none aggressive animals (those that you can walk up to and will ignore you until you attack them)

Firstly, turn the grid system on (I use amber client - CTRL + G) you will find it much easier to line up the shot. walk right up to the animal at point blank range. Wait until the animal stops moving and make sure you are right next to it, then take aim. (Most people say aim between the animals legs with the first click, I personally instead tend to aim at the centre of its body. Experiment and see what works best for you.) Wait until your shot power is in the green... if the animal moves, cancel the shot, and start again. When you have built up full(ish) power, then click the animal a second time to fire. The animal should either be killed now, or enter flee mode. If it enters flee mode, you can either chase it down and punch it to death, or if it is too quick to catch, make a note of which direction it is fleeing in and allow it to run off you mini map entirely. (Make sure you click the olive branch next to its portrait to 'peace' it) As soon as it leaves the mini map it should pretty soon stop running, and go back to being passive. Run in the direction the animal first ran in and when you find it again, start the process over.

This method assumes you have enough power in each shot to either kill the animal, or cause it to flee. If the animal is aggressive when you approach it, or after a single shot, it has enough HP that instead of entering flee mode, it stands and attacks you, then try method 2.

If you wonder why I told you to always bring water, it is so that you can replenish all your stamina before attacking an animal, so that if it does enter flee mode, you will have enough stamina that you can run after the animal and 'punch it out' or at least catch up to it quicker when it stops running, giving you less chance of loosing it.

Method 2. For aggressive animals, or those that require more than 1 arrow.

Again turn on the grid system. This will require either some patience or a little luck. You either want to find the animal you want to hunt near a cliff, or follow it at a distance until it wonders near a cliff. The cliff will need to be long enough (height doesn't matter) that the animal is unable to path find around it. When you are on the cliff, use the 'attack' icon (the sword) to click on the animal and draw it to the cliff. make sure you stand at least 1 tile back from the edge or else the animal can still attack you despite being on a different level to you. This will also work with being on the other side of a river. Just make sure the animal cant attack you if you have to swim, since if you get knocked out in deep water, your energy will continue to drain, and you will drown and die. (Cliffs are safer in this respect.)
When the animal is waiting at the base of the cliff/other side of the river but cant get to you, aim at it by clicking the shoot button on the icon of the animal in the corner of your screen. (This will 'auto aim' at the animal) wait until you have full shot power, then fire. If the animal does not now flee, take another shot. If it does flee, you can either jump down and chase it while punching (good method for boars, but DO NOT do this with bears) or same in method 1, 'peace it' wait until it stops running, and repeat from the start of method 2. (If you do this, do not 'attack' the animal with the sword icon the second time since it will flee straight away, instead manually aim at it from atop a cliff.)

Hope this helps, and happy hunting.

I wrote a similar guide for specifically hunting bears. I will dig it out and post it below.

Solo Bear Hunting Guide

Ok, so to solo hunt bears there are two things you will need. The first is a bow (and some arrows) the second is patience. Hunting bears on your own will take some time unless your looking to get your ass handed to you.

The first thing you will want to do is to locate a bear, usually wondering around the forest. When you have found a suitable bear you will need to follow it. You are looking for it to wonder into/close to a cliff. (You can substitute a river for a cliff if you like, but it can be risky. Make sure the bear doesn't knock you out in the middle of the river or you will bob there unconscious until your stamina drains and you drown.) It is important at this point to keep the bear on the edge of your screen to ensure it does not aggro you until you are ready.
When it gets near a suitably long cliff, you will want to jump up/down the cliff so you are on a different level to the bear. At this point you will want to 'attack' the bear. Do this by using the sword icon and clicking the bear. this should bring the bear to the edge of the cliff where you are standing and give you his portrait in the corner of your screen. Make sure you are standing at least one tile back from the edge of the cliff (I find it helps to have the grid on while hunting, CTRL + G in amber client) so that his attacks can't reach you. At this point the bear should be standing at the bottom of the cliff, putting defences up, but not actually going anywhere. The best way to shoot him, will be to click the 'shoot' button on the bear portrait which should auto aim at the bear. You can take your time with the shot, allowing the bar to fill up as much as possible, since the bear will not go anywhere. Once the aim bar is full, let him have it.
The bear may start to flee at this point, or may stay there for you to shoot again depending on the damage you are able to do with your shots.
When he does flee, immediately 'yield' to him, (click the olive branch next to his portrait) this will disengage you both from combat and hopefully mean the bear will not flee to far. The bear will stop running shortly after getting off your mini map. Keep and eye on which direction he is running, give him a few seconds, then jump up/down the cliff and run after him. This should allow him enough time to stop running, but not so much that you can't find him again.
When you locate him, start following him. You will once again want to keep him on the edge of your screen, however the reason this time is that any time he would have 'aggroed' on you, he will instead start to flee again. If this happens accidentally, do the same as before, yield to him, give him a few seconds, then catch up to him. You can use tis mechanic to your advantage however. If there is a cliff that would be ideal for shooting him, but he isn't wondering in that direction, you can run around the bear so that he is between the cliff and yourself. (Water for recovering stamina is useful here, but not a necessity.) If you 'attack' him at this point (sword icon, or it might happen as you approach him) he will immediately flee in the opposite direction to where you are standing. just remember to give him enough room to get off your mini map and yield to him immediately.
When he reaches the next ideal cliff, give him a wide birth so that you don't accidentally spook him, then jump up/down the cliff and walk to the edge where he is. For some reason, he doesn't seem to 'spook' when you are on different levels to him, and you can get right up next to him. This time you will want to be a little quicker about shooting him, so that he doesn't wonder off, and DON'T use the sword icon to attack him, or he will flee immediately and you will have to start the last part over. (To shoot him this time, try to get square onto him and scroll right in, then when you click the centre of his body, it should line the shot up correctly. A second click in the same place should hit him. Try to scroll the mouse wheel in as close as you can while still being able to click on him.) Depending on your shots power, he may flee again. If this happens just repeat the last steps again.
Eventually when you shoot him he will 'rage'. You will know he is in rage mode because his eyes will literally burn with white hot fire. At this point he will not flee and will stay at the edge of the cliff. Make sure it is a cliff he cannot path find around, and again, stay at least one tile from the edge. At this point he isn't going anywhere, so feel free to click his portrait again for the auto aim, and fire at will.

Congratulations! You should have one dead bear!

Remember to check the cliff face and floor next to the bear to see if you can recover your arrow, trust me, this helps with conserving ammunition a lot!

Good Luck & Happy Hunting!

Thanks Dantheman for the in depth guide!! However I think I want to give up hunting entirely until... forever... or until I have really high skills and gear that I can one shot everything with the basic 5 attacks/defenses you begin with. (NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, but I can only dream)

But I'm hoping that I can kill something using your guide, honestly I am afraid of dying since I live a while away from spawn area and even though I am still noobish I don't want to start over again.

Well start with foxes, they are easy to kill. 10 points into marksmanship 15 into carpentry and maybe 20 into survival will be enough to get the mats and skills to create a good enough quality bow and arrows to start with. Always use bone arrows if you can. (get your first ones by killing a bunny or chicken) A Q 10 bow and bone arrows should be enough to kill a fox to start with and practice with. After that work up from there.

You can use this to hunt early game easily:
Image
Lure the boar into the sticks (dark brown) then use your boat hitbox to block the rest of the area, you can then swim to the other side and shoot it. Make sure the water is shallow so it cant run across.
