How does deep artifice work?

Hi, I finally learned deep artifice and smelted my iron ochres. However, I obtained zero iron bar from the 50 iron ochres

. Was this just a bad luck or I need to keep the smelter window open when the smelting process is nearly done?

Bad luck, you don't have to have the window open.

Seems its completely random, guess the only thing you can do is keep trying and you will get iron eventually. Its like the lottery.

the chance of the ore being metal is determined when it is mined

the one with deep artifice has to mine the ore himself afaik
