Animal breeding

What determines which animal breeds with which animal? Is it just a radius check, or do they have to have a valid path to the animal? In the image below, I have two bulls in one pen and a cow and a bull in another pen. Is there any guarantee that only the pair will breed, or can they breed through the fence (I'm having fun visualizing that one)?

Of course they cant breed through fence. They need path to them so they can get.. Closer to each other
