What level of strength/axe would you reccomend to start

Postby OblongNoodle » Fri Jan 08, 2016 3:17 am

Title says it all. Haven't found a whole lot of info on h&h 2 mining. Just wondering how long I should wait to start. Bit of a hermit so strength levels are hard to come by. Also anything I should keep in mind while mining? Tips? Tricks?

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend buying a pickaxe using forageables (glimmermoss) or whatever the seller wants , with a q100-115 pick you will be able to mine the first level and maybe l2 with 10str...

Otherwise the strength needed depends on the q of the pickaxe/axe you can use and what you expect from mining...

As I started, mining was a hard task with ~10% per tick (first level, before mining update, shitty stats, no pickaxe, etc...).
Now I can mine most of the l5 with 100% pet tick which means 10 times faster, 10 times less energy needed.

As hermit you should try to hunt or try some baked goods, meat pie for example ?

So my conclusion will be, you can mine with any str, any tool it just depends on your expectations :D

I was going for more of a... Get me some basic metals so I can make my own pickaxe and/or other tools, etc. Not worried about qualities so much. But literally right now I have 20str and a q18 axe. So I'm not sure if I can expect to get far or if I should say screw it til I get like 50/50 or something.

With a q10ish axe, you might be able to dig some places in the first level with 10 strength. But, here's a tip. Think boar and bear meat is too hard to get for strength? Meat pies. Just get a chicken coop and hunt small animals, and watch the strength rise. Once you have loads of strength, then it'll be easier to hunt boar and bear, then easier to get stronger, then easier to hunt, then easier to get stronger, etc. Early on mining is a bit shit but starting the grind quickly to start climbing is important.

But yeah, with a q10 axe and 12-15 ish str I could dig iron ochre, but I'm sure I could beforehand too.

Same here, I was able to mine iron ochre with ql10 axe and 20ish str. But that was before the metal quality changes, and i'm not sure if hardness wasn't raised then too. Your best bet would be to just try.

Hunt down a bear, dry the pelt, make bear cape. Take the teeth and make a bear tooth talisman. These are a big boost to strength.

The problem with trade is there may be nobody nearby that is willing to trade even a moderate quality pick.

the ability to mine is handicapped to the hardiness nearby i could with str 30 and quali 10 axe hardly mine aything in the cave nearby. But i have seen a settlment 20-30 min to the west that have piles of metal without a pali and a base thats nearly 15x15( i thought about stealing but 4-6 guys with bases together is maybe not somebody to anger).
best thing to get better stones for axes, you can get them by digging on stone areas above ground or in caves and mines. But beware everytime you mine unknown area theres a risk of cave ins.

Travel to a charter stone requires traveling from a charter stone or spawning at a charter stone from character creation. A good idea, sure, but that means you have to be able to build one yourself, which implies being able to hunt deer at least, and doesn't the village totem require metal now? If you can build a village yourself, do you need to trade for a pickaxe? No. Would getting a nice quality pick be good? Yes.
