How do I get better fps?

Any tips? Using Amber client without shadows, per-fragment lighting and anti aliasing results in 7-8 fps.

Anything else I could do or any other clients that offer better performance?

Yeah, getting a 17+ year old computer definitely would not help the situation.

Check some of the other clients. I think a couple have ways of turning off flavor objects or simplifying tiles to help boost frame rate. Thing is, I've heard reports from people with hardware that was mid to high level at some point in the last couple of years and have had rendering speed issues.
