What is the best way to mine now?

What is the current methodology for poking cave walls now that caveins are actually problematic?
Should I just risk poking everywhere, or find a safe spot and play minesweeper from there?

how i mine is i mine one block,then go over too and mine there by the time i am done there the first spot should have settled so i mine the spot in between then wait for that to settle. then i mine first spot. rinses and repeat however heres a warning i have had a cave in with this method before.

I don't think you understand how caveins work.

It's not worth poking anymore, the concussion wound and extras will add up very quickly, to the point where you'll have to call off the day after the first cave-in.
I spent a lot of time poking and found very little before I had access to rustroots, after that point I found more minerals than I could possibly use.

Early spectacles are nice, but by the time you've mined enough ores with your zero industry to make the smithing set, it will be late to make too much of a difference.

I don't think you understand how caveins work.

not quite sure but all i know is i have only ever had one cave in doing this.

if dust then one of the touching 8 tiles -will- cause a cave in no matter how long it has been since the dust has settled

you will have a difficult time first starting to mine no matter what you do. get a mining helmet (2bars of hard metal) to protect some damage but then you can't use a bear cloak. i either use supports or mine smart and play minesweeper with the dust. i would never mine without a support and low hhp. or make a mining alt and mine with it

mining is late game unless you find enough surface ore in my opinion

surface ore goes quickly tho? i have already used up my two heavy earth rocks, two bloodstone rocks, and 1 black ore. mining is alot earlier game than you think especially now that this world is like 2 weeks old and most of the good surface rocks have been grabbed.

An alt with just mining and str to poke the walls, and then real toon to mine.

Can't confirm this since I'm too scared to test it out but someone mentioned they had a cave in after mining a tile adjacent to one without any warning dust when they mined it.

i think it's late game because it's high risk low reward until you have atleast some strength (30+) with a pick or a high q axe and some rustroot

i had decent q axe (25q) from a high surv and digging stone and some rustroot then a mining alt with about 60str (+23 from bear cloak and talisman) a few days into the game to mine. just hunt boars and force feed the alt. i got lucky with some surface ores but wasn't nearly enough

it's tough getting an anvil and hammer then a pickaxe to mine easily off surface ores alone, that's 11bars of hard metal just to get started
