You can cram trees as close together as you like. They don't get stunted from that anymore. However, they can and do just randomly get stunted and stop growing forever. From my experience, it seems like 10-20% of all trees you plant simply will get stunted and fail to reach maturation. There is no way to counter this. It just happens.

All trees seem to grow at about the same rate, which is roughly 1 week for maturation on forest terrain.

I'll propose some questions here too about trees seems fit:

Do resources from trees respawn? (branches, seeds, bark, mul berries / leaves)
Are there pros / cons to harvesting from immature trees?
Is there a way to ''turn'' the tree's ''binding box'' when you plant it?

(Thanks for the answers onep!)

You can place trees as close as possible.
The only thing that is affected by immature trees is the log quality.
Taking seeds, branches, bark and other things has no affect on the quality.
Get druidic rite to make stunting and failed trees as minimal as possible.
Only plant on forest biomes for maximum growth. 1 week for trees or like 3 weeks on non-forest biomes.
Stunting is simply chance, nothing besides the green abilities change it.

The binding box is based on the direction you were facing when you planted the tree.
Resources respawn (maybe?) but it takes SO LONG it's basically non-existent. Chop down or ignore old trees.

The best tree to Q farm is Blackthorn Bushes (Sloan Berries) for block quality, and then take your pick of bough trees. For log quality, I suggest doing something like chestnut trees and replanting them as as their seeds appear. They give seeds before full maturation, so you can spam new generations faster than waiting for 1 week iterations from 2 seed trees.

I think I covered it all.

You may also want to consider Pine. It's supposed to yield more tar, though I have not had a chance to confirm it.
