It's a matter of luck. I'm doing alright with my heavy earth atm.
But I won´t say it´s giving me great returns

I found iron ochre to be worse. I was always able to get at least 2 bars of iron with heavy earth. I even got three with tunnelling and a little over half a smelter of heavy earth.

But over half a smelter of iron ochre produced a single iron bar.

This sample size is ridiculous.

Each smelter smelting is an event with independent outcomes. Even when given a previous failure, the next event is not more likely to succeed. Even if the chances for success are 99.99%, and you are smelter with 1,000,000 ores, they may all fail. This is not likely, but could be happening. Your sampling sizes were too small to say any conclusion.
