Is Haven and Hearth like American Jails?

Postby object » Sat Apr 09, 2016 8:12 pm

I'm thinking about getting in but I'm worried that I'll be labeled fresh meat and sold off to some fat biker dude who has the nickname 'Precious'. So I'm really curious about how bad it is for new players and how much lube I need to stock up before joining this game.

Just do not get seen. Men cannot kill what they are not seeing. Trust no one. Build wall.

Well at least you are prepared for the worst. Some warnings are in order first.

- Death in the game is permanent. You lose that character should they fall to an untimely demise. It is possible to retain some of the LP spend on the character though.
- There are some griefers in the game that will steal/destroy/kill and not necessarily in that order. Sometimes it is not because for griefing purposes but being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- While it is possible to set yourself up with security that anything short of a wall jump will protect you, keep in mind that dying may be inevitable and you should try to not get attached to your characters (yes plural).

Here are some tips that, I feel you should know.
- If you are going to get set up in a home, try to be as far from the waters so you can avoid being seen. Not saying that everyone is hostile but the ones that do does tour the river due to its speed.
- Once you have a decent amount of belongings and structure, be sure to claim it. Most of the people consider anything unclaimed as fair game to take.
- Get set up with a palisade as soon as possible.
- Consider setting up a village claim afterwards, even if it is a village of you.

If you have any simple questions (ex. How-to questions), post here viewtopic.php?f=42&t=39862. For anything a bit more complex, it is worth making a post on its own.

Because you never been on the receiving end of it.
He who becomes the slave of habit,
who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience, dies slowly.

Patchouli's advice is sound and captures the game in a nutshell. I'll only add a couple of other things on top of that:

* The environment is just as punishing as the players. Some animals will KO you if you run too fast or just happen to be unlucky (badgers particularly); some will attack you, or even kill you, at will. The best thing you can do is to look for their icons and, upon seeing them, stay away from them, until you have the wherewithall to hunt them. And if you mean to get metal - which is VERY useful - you're probably going to need to go mining in a cave, and risk many things - running into bats, causing a cave-in.

* In my experience, saying "hello" to anyone you meet can be a life saver. Start up a conversation with passers-by, if possible. Offer to trade; you never know if someone needs something you have and can make easily. Showing yourself to be sociable, while not a guarantee you will live, makes it less likely you'll be killed. People like sociable people.

* Do get a palisade. They're a relatively inexpensive, effective way to protect yourself from raiders. Even if you cannot afford one yet, at least build a fence in your claim to give a little protection to your stuff.

* Lastly, read Sevenless's guide, here: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40714 It is chock full of information that will make your experience much, much less frustrating.
"...the dungeon and shackles are already at my threshold to show me here and now my eternal disgrace. Only you can work the miracle to make life possible for a soul so imperiled by doubt, O Atoner for all, exalted beyond saying." - St. Gregory of Narek, Book of Lamentations, Prayer 1.

You are much loved! Love in return!
