Silk Eggs Gone?

I put some silk eggs in my sleek new herbalist's table but to my surprise they disappeared when I came back a day later. Spooky.
There must be some explanation for this!

Eggs will hatch after 8 hours. Worms will eat every 4 hours. If these worms will miss 2 meals, they will die. You must come back within 16 hours to feed the worms, or they will die based on this numbers.

What Ysh said is probably the most likely answer short of them having been stolen. They probably starved.
