Maybe you built it to far away from something destructible?

Indeed. If you place it so that it can wreck something, you get the "Wreck" option on it immediately; it'll just tell you that you have to wait when you select it.

Again, you don't need to wait 24 hours to check. If you get the "Wreck" option when right-clicking the wrecking ball, it will work.

We just discovered that it needs to be facing the correct direction. If it is backwards, it will not work. It is not obvious when building it what the "correct" direction is, but when you build it, you can check whether it gives you the "wreck" option. It will give you the option even if it is newly built and not ready to use yet.

However, your screenshot seems to show yours in the correct direction.

You might need to build it off of the grid as close as you can.

I beg to disagree. The bracing pegs going into the ground are clearly visible, and which direction was clearly intuitive to me from their angle.

A tiny, almost unnoticeable part of the structure, when the ball clearly has the capacity to swing in both directions. I would not call it intuitive at all.
