Charcoal is made in a tar kiln rather than a normal kiln. After you build it, you hold blocks of wood and right-click them on the kiln to load it. Or you can load entire stockpiles of blocks with a wheelbarrow. Then you light it up and let it burn out which takes several hours if you filled it up.

pro tip: use a bucket on the tar kiln to get tar once the charcoal is ready. then make a torch, takes no cloth and is refillable with more tar

To note, you couldn't find the right page because "charcoal" doesn't exist anymore. It is now generically named "coal" and what you dig out of the ground is "black coal."

When you see a "Legacy" tag on the page, it exists only for the old world and doesn't exist in the new. For future reference, if you see a "legacy" page without a corresponding page without that name in a search, the item hasn't been implemented.
