Players tend to hide from each other if they're not out looking to kill each other. Making contact and communication with others is an art in and of itself. If you're looking to connect with others right away you'll probably want to check the Dwarves & Thieves subforum and either contact villages/groups that are recruiting or make your own thread looking to join or recruit.

For fun, loot, paranoia, safety, or to be a dick. There are lots of raiders who kill players on sight, others are worried that players near their bases are spies looking to siege or gank, sometimes it's best to KO someone if they seem to be following you, and some people kill on a whim. While not every single person will attack you, it's enough that most players are scared of meeting other players in the wild and will abscond if they catch wind of you if they don't mean to fight you.
