A person has to at least vandalize a roundpole fence to get in. A gate is pointless because if they want to steal, they'll break the fence anyway. Without a gate, you force them to leave a greater scent to even look around your camp to see if there is even anything worth stealing. It'll keep out more casual snoops. Anyone that wants to mess with you will be breaking in anyway and destroying or stealing everything they can before they have to walk off to heal.

Lie. You spawn on top of the minehole, walk off, and bash the gates.
Yup. Only gates give visitor debuff. A minehole isn't a gate. Also to note, unless it's been fixed, there's been an issue with mineholes (and cave entrances?) losing a visitor debuff even if staying on the same claim. (I don't recall because I've always walled off top and bottom of mineholes, anyway, just for added security.)
I'll note I think Thedrah is assuming the person comes up the mine and then walks through the gate normally. If they're up to no good, they're not going to go through a gate, anyway, and if you have materials for mineholes, you should have a palisade around it.
