How do I place logs neatly to save space?

In this picture the red is someone stacking logs which saves a lot of space, and the orange is my placement which uses about 50% more space. How does the person stack them like that?

Lift up a log, right click it. Press CTRL to smoosh them closer together when you place them, and shift+scroll to rotate.

When I right click it, it places the log down automatically, I don't even get to see the ghost of the log.

Right click the log, not the ground
