Primitive Casting Rod

Is there a trick to using the casting rod other than random? I hooked several fish and only caught one. The text seems to have some sort of impact on what to do some of the time. Any tips?

Thanks for that, I was hoping lure fishing would get more fish than regular fishing, guess not.
